king g

King G is is an up-scale, two level bar and sandwich shop located in the East Crossroads Arts District in Kansas City. The building originally had several interesting features, including a partial basement, with the above floor it demolished.

HJM worked with the owner to develop the bar and kitchen layout and design for the 4,600 square foot space, along with the exterior façade, plans, and interior finishes. HJM led the mechanical/electrical/plumbing team in design coordination of the landlord work and tenant side work. The project concept is a nod to King Gambrinus, a folklore icon of beer, brewing, and joy. Using the dynamics of the existing space, the “pit” bar was created as an intimate area full of character, simply by keeping the existing foundation walls that surround it visible. Exposed to the main bar above, the area is connected to the entire space. The bar is accented by a 2 story graffiti-style mural, which supports local artists and encapsules character that is true to the crossroads. King G’s is now a popular spot in the community.
